Why pregnancy causes back pain
Back pain is very common in pregnancy. As your belly grows, your center of gravity shifts forward and your posture changes. Pregnancy hormones also loosen the ligaments around the pelvis so it can widen for birth, which can make the low back and pelvic joints ache.
Common signs
- An ache in the low back that builds through the day
- Pain over the back of the pelvis or hips
- Pain that spreads into the buttocks or thighs
- Trouble getting comfortable at night
Get care right away if you have
- Severe pain, or pain that comes and goes in a rhythm (may be labor)
- Vaginal bleeding or fluid leaking
- Fever, or burning when you urinate
- Call your OB or midwife about any of these
How we help at Grace Wellness
We use the Webster technique, a specific, gentle analysis and adjustment of the sacrum and pelvis, with pregnancy support cushions and positioning adapted for every trimester.
Prenatal massage with comfortable side-lying positioning eases sore low back and hip muscles. We are happy to coordinate with your OB or midwife.
What happens at your first visit
- Paperwork. A few forms about your health. Fill them out online before you arrive to save time.
- Consultation and exam. You talk through your symptoms and goals, then your doctor checks posture, range of motion, reflexes and strength.
- X-rays, only if needed. Taken right here in the office, no separate appointment.
- Your first treatment. In most cases you're treated the same day, and your doctor explains each step before starting.
